Easy Dairy Substitutes.

I think for lots of people, myself included at one point, the idea or possibility of giving up milk products is a terrifying one. Most of us grow up drinking or consuming dairy in one way, shape or form. However, having now kicked my dairy habit (which was surprisingly easy), I thought I'd share some ways that I've found to simply substitute dairy, I promise you won't feel like you're missing out!

I'm a proper northern lass and that means that I really love a proper brew. I've tried all the dairy-free milks going and the only one that comes close to making a decent cuppa is Oatly's oat milk. I've tried other oat milks too and quite frankly, they just don't cut the mustard like Oatly does.

Keeping with the oat theme we've got going on here, I'd like to introduce you to Oatly Creamy Oat. This little diamond makes a gloriously decadent creamy sauce with significantly less calories and fat. It's win win in my eyes. You can also put it on desserts, although I'm yet to try whipping it.

This isn't a traditional like-for-like dairy substitute, but it is a great way to add a cheesy hit to you grub. Yes it looks like fish food and smells ever so slightly like feet, I know I'm not selling it but trust me it's worth a try. Plus it's healthier than cheese and you can buy a fortified version to get some extra nutrients in yo' body. You can see how I made a 'cheese' sauce using nutritional yeast here.

I have to say I've really quite enjoyed the vegan cheese that I've tried (mainly the Violife ones pictured). I personally think that they taste a bit like the Dairylea strip cheeses I used to eat when I as younger. The only thing with the Violife cheese is that I've found it doesn't melt very well and so it's good for pizzas etc. I know Vegusto do a cracking range of vegan cheeses so I'll certainly be trying some out in the near future, watch this space!

I remember my mum always used to use Vitalite when I was younger. Vitalite is a great margarine substitute both for baking and for toast/bread etc. It doesn't taste like butter and quite frankly I can't be arsed making my own vegan butter so it'll do and I personally think it does a grand job.

Ooh coconut yogurt, you delicious creamy delight. Since I've cut out dairy I haven't felt overly enamoured with dairy free yoghurts, but , coconut yoghurt does fill the yoghurt shaped hole it left in my life. I've only tried the Coconut Collaborative yoghurt, however, I believe that Coyo is also bloody delicious.

Also I'd just like to put it out there that Ben & Jerry's have now launched DAIRY-FREE F**KING ICE CREAM!! I'm not even the biggest ice cream lover but you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be working my way through some of this (when I find it), because I freaking can.

Do you have any other dairy-free recommendation that can help someone wanting to make the switch? Leave e your thoughts in the comments below or drop me a tweet @mygenerallife.
