DIY | Dry Shampoo.

Dry shampoo is a staple part of my personal care routine to keep my hair looking clean and fresh inbetween washes. I try to only wash my hair every 2-3 days and so for me a bit of dry shampoo is definitely needed on day 2/3. Although recently I've been noticing that I'm getting quite painful spots around the front of my hair line. So after a bit of thought I've concluded that this is quite likely being caused by my dry shampoo as this is the only product that generally only makes contact with that area. So I've decided to shun shop bought dry shampoo and whip up my own with just 2 cheap as chips ingredients.

Not only is making your own dry shampoo so unbelievably easy, but it contains natural ingredients that you can pick up at any supermarket and no chemical nasties.

So what are the magic ingredients? Are you sure you're ready for this folks?

Cornflour and cinnamon.

Yup, that's it, just cornflour and cinnamon.

So along with your magic ingredients, you will need some sort of receptical to store them in, so I picked up a mason jar to mix up my dry shampoo and also a pepper shaker to decant some in to, to make it easier to sprinkle on my hair.

So all you do is just add your ingredients to your jar - I think I did about 6 heaped tablespoons of cornflour to about 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, but it's completely up to you what ratio you go for. The whole point of the cinnamon is to tint the cornflour so it's not completely white and it also doubles as an AMAZING scent! If you have darker hair, you can also use unsweetened cocoa to add a brown tint and reduce the chances of those dreaded white marks in your hair.

So, does it work? Well, I definitely think so. Although you definitely need to give it a good massage into your hair and scalp in order to work the cornflour, but it definitely soaks up the oils. OK, it's not quite as convenient as spraying conventional dry shampoo into your hair, BUT, your hair ends up smelling like cinnamon...so swings and roundabouts. My hair wasn't particularly greasy when I originally made this, however, I did take some photos and  I think there's definitely a visible difference.

  1. I am definitely trying this, it sounds like a good idea. I really need a dry shampoo but some natural dry shampoos I found online seemed a bit expensive so I decided not to buy them. Ideally, you make one at home if you know how of course so this is exactly what I needed, thanks!

  3. Hi Jordan,

Love this little guide - I rarely need dry shampoo, but on those rare occasions it really is a lifesaver, so making this at home with the simplest of ingredients is perfect for me. Plus, cinnamon-smelling hair? Yum!

Yes I've heard arrowroot powder is good too, although I couldn't find it in my local supermarket so decided to go with cornflour. Who wouldn't want hair that smells like chocolate?! haha xx

Well I think this is as cheap as it comes, total ingredients to make enough to last a lifetime cost about £1! Hope you like it, thanks for stopping by Petra :] xx

  9. I've taken to using talc on my hair, literally only because the corner shop had sold out of dry shampoo when I needed it most!

Problem is, I can't stand the smell! Great idea adding cinnamon. :) I'll be trying this when my talc runs out! Xx
