A Vegetarian Update.

It's now been 5 weeks since I made the switch to a vegetarian diet, so I thought I'd give you a little update on how I've found the transition and what my thoughts are now.

my general life healthy lifestyle blog

So if you've read my "A Vegetarian Revelation" post, you will know that my transition to vegetarianism was a quick one, there was no easing into it gently, I just threw myself in after watching Vegucated and feeling totally disturbed by what I saw.

Now I have to say, although it has required a bit more effort at times, I've really enjoyed my vegetarian journey so far. The thing that has surprised me the most is that I don't really miss or crave meat. I've had the odd moment where I've smelt a bacon sandwich and thought "holy smokes that smells amazing", but it's not been enough to make me eat it. One thing I do love is a cooked breakfast and the other half and I do enjoy a cheeky Harvester all you can eat brekkie once in a while. But even that hasn't been a major issue as I can quite happily eat the soy and leek sausages with beans, eggs, hash browns, mushrooms etc.

I've also found I've been far more experimental in my cooking. I've tried my hand at making falafel, bean burgers and veggie chilli, amongst other things. I've really enjoyed trying foods that I would never have picked or made previously, and I'm finding I'm really enjoying eating veg and I don't feel like anything is missing from my diet by not eating meat. I've not really eaten many meat replacement products such as Quorn (other than veggie sausages) because I personally find it a bit weird eating something that's made to look and taste like meat. But that's my personal opinion and that doesn't mean that Quorn is a bad thing and when in a pinch I wouldn't rule it out.

Will I be staying veggie? Yes. That's not to say that I will remain veggie forever, but for now I'm quite happy to continue as I am.

  1. Wow, 5 weeks, you are so good! Last year I ate vegetarian food for a week as part of National Vegetarian Week and I was running out of ideas on what to eat towards the end of the week. I was spending more time cooking from scratch to prepare food, but I was enjoying experimenting with my food like you. Well done on your progress so far! Really admire your determination. I currently eat 80-90% vegetarian food but I couldn't be a veggie as I like to eat fish and seafood sometimes. I would be really interested in seeing your weekly meal plan. Could you share this at all?

Haha thank you! I tend to have porridge with almond milk, peanut butter and seeds for breakfast, lunch is usually left overs from the night before, and dinner is things like veggie bolognaise, bean burgers and chips, pesto zoodles with veggies, falafel with rice or mexican veggies with rice and guac....I also have frozen veggie stuff like cauliflower cheese grills and mushroom burger things on hand if I can't be bothered to fully cook from scratch. This last week I've been loving mushroom stew and creamy polenta which is amazing and almost tastes like beef! I'm not finding it too hard to be prepared to be honest and it's definitely getting easier as times goes on! I am going to post more recipes too, I just need to get organised and get them written! xx

  3. Thanks for sharing this Jordan. It looks like you are really prepared for your vegetarian eating. I should really make a better use of my freezer! I don't buy much frozen food but I will check what frozen vegetarian options I can find in the supermarket for those busy days. I also love mushrooms and polenta but I haven't made it in a long time. It's good to be reminded of all the vegetarian meals you could make. Thanks!
